The Bathhouse - 41”x 29”

ZAR 3,500.00

Watercolour, Gel Ink & Acrylic Paint

Original size: 10”x14”(Reserved)

Inspired by the film Spirited Away from Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli, the Bathouse was painted during a period of intense mental conflict and strife experienced by the artist at the time of the pandemic in the year 2020. She painted this while unintentionally repatriating back to Melbourne, Australia for nine months during the Covid Pandemic.

As coronavirus gradually restricted physical movement and enforced isolation from loved ones, the only option for the artist to continue practising movement was through mental forms of curiosity and opening her mind. As the piece exhibits, the artist metaphorically expressed her feeling of being trapped through the depiction of an earthly Bathhouse, juxtaposed with whimsical sea creatures and planets from faraway galaxies in the background. Thus, despite the presence of Covid impeding physical movement, learning to strengthen one’s mind enables them to persevere through any adversity. This piece highlights the artist’s continuous practice of painting and artful experimentation as a means of “mental exercise”: to improve or sustain physical or mental health and fitness.
