Four Eyes Wide Shut - 41”x29”
Watercolour, Gel Ink & Acrylic Paint
Original size: 10”x14”(Reserved)
Closing her eyes in honour of the past versions of herself, the sugar skull or calavera in the centre of the painting reflects on her various lives, lessons and experiences gathered up to this point in her life. While those components of her memories have shaped her sense of being, they remain a part of her past.
Four Eyes Wide Shut captures the feeling of nostalgia and begs one to question whether components of one's past should be held onto, or let go of. While the other sugar skulls have open eyes, their missing pupils prompt viewers to ponder whether they are necessary, similar to the way one might wonder whether holding onto past memories can leave one nostalgic, or inhibit their sense of growth.
